I would like to add that I have been using Tamiya Acrylic. I find it to be the best as far as drying and even coating.

Tamiya has some excellent colors and the consistency is good. Light Sand TS-46 (only in spray, unfortunately) is a near exact match for '83 Grunt. I have trouble with the coating, myself, but that's because I'm counterculture and use enamels. It's what I grew up with.

Enamel paint covers great, but it tends to be too think if you're painting over subtle details. The rumors about enamel not chipping are not true. I despise painting shoulders and elbows. The fumes will mess you up, too! Very Happy

Cost wise, I think acrylics are available in some pretty cheap options. So if someone is just getting started, that'd be the way to go.

I have to agree about Tamiya being the best brand from my personal experience. It's thin, very consistent, and coats great. It's a little more expensive than other brands I think.

I also use Citadel (Games Workshop) and Vallejo. Citadel is fine, very reliable as well but a bit thicker than Tamiya. Vallejo has a fantastic selection with about a dozen different shades of every color, however it may have some consistency issues. Sometimes their paint can be a bit "grainy", as the pigments aren't crushed enough.

Has anyone ever used reaper paints? I have a comic shop around here that sells it. It is used for the little miniature guys like D&D I think. However I can't get much info on the paint itself and I was considering it for some customs. Here's the link

I use Liquitex Artist Acrylics. They range from 4-6 a tube for basics and 8-15 for masters grade. Ive got so much leftover from art school that I really dont need to buy anything else for a good long while.

It also coats quite well, and does really nice washes.

It's strange to ask this... but I will... Very Happy

Did you ever used fingernail polish? I heard somewhere (can't remember where) someone using this. He said it has great durability, many colours (but many are not GI Joes compatible unless you lithe the 90's...).

Also, what do you think about this: http://www.duplicolor.com/products/vinylFabricCoating/

Yes but if with 1 can you can do 8 figs... this means $1/ fig!

And results look good: http://case-mods.linear1.org/im-high-on-vinyl-dye/

I believe investigations are in order, warranting the possibility of a wide ranging color pallet.

I also found this:

http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/modding/46

As I see it, it can be useful for the main colour of a fig or a vehicle. As for example, red is often hard to do. So use this to make a Crimson jeep, then use regular acrylic paint to make highlight.

I'm just talking in theory because I never used it myself. Nobody ever tried?
